Africa

Home-Start in Africa is lively and expanding, with national associations in Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.

  • In Kenya, 350 volunteers have been recruited and trained in six administrative Districts.  More than 1400 families have been visited, providing support to over 7000 children.
  • Home-Start South Africa celebrated the launch of their national association and the opening of new premises in March 2007. Their two local schemes offer Play Therapy, counselling, a toy library, thrift shop, low budget cookery courses for families and a “drop in room”, as well as home visiting support.
  • In Uganda, four schemes have been set up, representing all four geographical areas of the country, with committed co-ordinators and volunteers visiting and providing an array of ideas and services to parents and families.

In all three countries, the schemes have recruited committed and energetic volunteers, who support families in need in a wide range of settings, from rural villages to urban professional neighbourhoods.

HIV/AIDS

According to UNICEF, 12 million children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Less than 10 per cent of these children are currently receiving public support and services. Home-Start supports aids-affected families in the three countries where we currently operate.
