Origins
In 2004, Dr Saigo visited the U.K. to research Family Centres and Sure-Start programmes whilst on sabbatical leave. During his visit he discovered the home-visiting system, Home-Start, which is supported by many volunteers, and became convinced that this method would work well for Japanese families.

In 2007, Home-Start Japan was established and started its practical study and promotion. In October, Home-Start International Director Anna Stuttard visited Japan, and several symposiums were held to introduce Home-Start all over the country. According to surveys at those events, most of the participants agreed that the Home-Start method is appropriate for Japanese families.

In 2008, with a grant from the Welfare And Medical Service Agency (WAM), Home-Start Japan started actively promoting the project and four trial schemes - Tokyo (Koto-ward, Kita-ward,) Oita and Kumamoto - opened. Home-Start Japan supported 14 families in 2008.

Objectives
We are aiming to increase the number of schemes and develop the knowledge and skills as a National Organization to support them properly. We are now legally registered as a Non-Profit Organization.
